中欧时间2013年2月28日下午八时，本笃十六世辞任教皇，是为額我略十二世辞任六个世纪后首位辞去教皇职务的人[6]暨是1296年教皇雷定五世退隐以来第一位自愿辞职的人[7][8][9]。辭任後，他在罗马度过余生。

关于本笃十六世健康状况恶化的报道可以追溯到2017年。当年10月和11月，他与彼得·西瓦尔德和帕绍主教斯特凡·奥斯特的合照在脸书上流传。图片显示本笃十六世有一只黑眼圈。在图片发表前一周，他在家中滑倒，身上出现了血肿[10][11]。这在几周前就已经出现在针对前教皇健康状况的猜测中[10]。

2020年7月1日，本篤的哥哥乔治·拉青格在本笃十六世于6月探望他后不久便与世长辞[12][13]。

2020年8月3日，继西瓦尔德于8月1日来访后德国媒体纷纷对本笃十六世的健康状况进行猜测，本篤的助手透露他患有三叉神經痛，但表示他的病情并不严重[14]。马耳他红衣主教马里奥·格雷奇于2020年12月2日向《梵蒂冈新闻》称，本笃十六世在讲话时遇到了严重的困难，据报道他向红衣主教长老会说：“上帝取走了我的声音，以便让我欣赏沉默”[15]。

逝世

同日，教廷公开了本笃十六世于2006年8月29日写下的精神遗嘱，而该文件直到他逝世后才被公众所知[24][25]。秘书、密友乔治-甘斯韦恩表示，本笃十六世的遗言是“耶稣，我爱你！”（德語：Jesus, ich liebe dich!）[26]。

葬礼

梵蒂冈对在任教皇逝世至葬礼期间和之后发生的事情有严格的程序[28]。由于缺乏先例，再者本篤十六世的死因尚不明確，梵蒂冈最初表示将在他死后的几个小时内公布葬礼计划，此外还表示他的遗体将于2023年1月2日移灵至聖伯多祿大殿[3]。马泰奥·布鲁尼还透露葬礼将于1月5日举行，并由教宗方济各监督[29][3]。梵蒂冈方面仅邀请了德国及意大利政府的官方代表团[30]。由于本笃十六世非在任教皇，故其遗体并未佩戴披带及携带教宗权杖[31]。

1月2日早上，本笃十六世的遗体被迁移至圣伯多禄大殿，并陈列（英语：Lying in state）三天[34]。据圣座新闻办公室表示，陈列期间约有195,000人到场悼念[35]。4日晚间，本笃十六世的面部被盖上白布，在将其在位时所使用的物件放到遗体旁后，棺材正式闭合[36]。

葬礼弥撒的计划书于1月3日公布[37]。马泰奥·布鲁尼于弥撒开始前透露，此次弥撒的各个环节与常规礼拜仪式（英语：Church service）大致相同，只是将适用于在任教皇的部分用其他方式代替[38]。为了和先前的教皇葬礼区分，教廷决定以感恩經（英语：Anaphora (liturgy)）作为本笃十六世的祭文，而不采用此前使用的罗马经文（英语：Canon of the Mass）[39]。

葬礼被定于5日09:30左右在聖伯多祿廣場开始[40]，由继任教宗方济各主持[41]，西斯汀小堂合唱团（英语：Sistine Chapel Choir）负责葬礼音乐，樞機團團長若翰·雷负责圣餐礼相关事宜[42]。此次葬礼约有50,000参加[43]，其中有部分参与者要求尽快封圣[44]。根据本笃十六世的遗嘱，该次葬礼的规模比一般的教皇葬礼较小[45]。

教宗方济各在弥撒仪式上根据福音书上的部分章节作出了简短的布道（英语：Homily），并对本笃十六世的一生表示称赞。有评论人士以此与本笃十六世在若望保禄二世的葬礼（英语：Death and funeral of Pope John Paul II）上所作的更具赞美意味的布道进行对比[46][45]。

在此次葬礼之前，首次有教皇参与筹办前任教皇的葬礼是在1802年，当时于1799年在法国逝世的庇護六世的遗体被带回罗马，时任教皇庇護七世出席了他的葬礼[46][47]。

葬礼结束后，本笃十六世被正式葬在圣伯多禄大殿的地下室内，而若望保祿二世自2005年去世后也曾一度葬在同一地点，直到2011受福（英语：Beatification of Pope John Paul II）后迁离.[48][46]。根据过往传统，本笃十六世的丝柏（英语：Cypress）制棺材被放置在锌制棺材中，而锌制棺材又由橡木外棺包裹[36]。2023年1月8日始，坟墓开放公众参观[49]。

1月31日，梵蒂冈发行了本笃十六世的纪念邮票[50]。

为遵守本笃十六世简办葬礼的要求，梵蒂冈仅邀请了意大利及德国政要派遣代表团[51]，而其他国家亦可派代表以私人名义参加[52]。这一决定受到葡萄牙总统馬塞洛·雷貝洛·德索薩批评，他表示自己只会代表国家而不会以私人名义前往[53]。
