社會人類學

社會人類學(Social anthropology)是人類學的主要分支,研究世界各地的不同社會的性質與差異。一般而言,社會人類學家的研究範圍與對象大致與文化人類學相同,並且同樣採用長期密集的田野調查(主要是參與觀察法)進行研究。不過相較於文化人類學起源於美國,社會人類學發源於英國,並且以英國作為主要根據地,故有時稱為「英國社會人類學」。社會人類學家強調藉由紮實與穩固的田野調查探究特定人群的社會組織:其中包含風俗經濟政治組織,法律與衝突調解,消費、交換、親屬與家庭結構的模式,性別關係,兒童養育與社會化宗教等等。

社會人類學也探索意義所扮演的角色、社會關係的模稜兩可與矛盾、社會性的模式、暴力與衝突,以及社會行為的潛藏邏輯。社會人類學家的訓練,是對於論述、儀式與象徵行為的詮釋,不僅將它們視為文本,而是將它們連結到行動、實踐與歷史脈絡。社會人類學家主張,各種立場與觀點的多樣性,見諸於任何一個社會群體之中。

歷史

社會人類學具有來自十九世紀許多學科的歷史根源,包括民族學民俗學古典學及其他(參閱人類學史)。社會人類學的前身,在十九世紀晚期 愛德華·伯內特·泰勒詹姆斯·弗雷澤的作品中成型,並且在1890年到1920年間,歷經多次在研究方法與理論上的重大變革,強調具原創性的田野工作、在自然場景中對於社會行為的長期全貌研究,並引進法國與德國的社會理論。

世界各地的許多大學設有社會人類學系。社會人類學這個領域的擴展速度超乎這個學科創立者的預期,例如這個學科的次領域結構與動力(Structure and Dynamics)。

1920年代到1940年

當代的社會人類學是在第一次世界大戰之後,創立於英國倫敦政經學院。其影響力同時包括布朗尼斯勞·馬凌諾斯基所帶領的研究方法革命,他在1915年到1918年間,在美拉尼西亞超布連群島採用過程取向的田野工作;以及阿弗列·芮克里夫-布朗的有系統比較研究的理論計畫,這是依據嚴格的田野工作與涂爾幹社會學結構功能論[1]。其他的知識先驅包括瑞弗斯(W. H. R. Rivers)與哈登(Alfred Court Haddon),他們的研究取向反映著威廉·馮特與巴斯典的當代俗民心理學(Volkerpsychologie);以及愛德華·伯內特·泰勒爵士,他依循孔德的主張,將人類學界定為實證科學。艾德蒙·李區將社會人類學界定為一種比較研究的微型社會學(comparative micro-sociology),它是植基於密集的田野工作研究。對於科學與社會的本質,從來都不存在著一種定於一尊的正統理論,而是經常存在著介於幾種嚴重對立的觀點之間的ㄧ個緊張關係。

1940年代至1980年代

二次世界大戰之後,包含著民族誌與民族學成分的社會文化人類學,分成美國學派的文化人類學,以及歐洲的社會人類學,這是藉由挑戰結構功能論,吸收來自李維史陀結構主義麥克斯·格拉克曼的曼徹斯特學派 (人類學),並吸納對於衝突、變遷、都市人類學與網絡等課題的研究。

1980年代至今

歐洲社會人類學家學會(European Association of Social Anthropologists,EASA)成立於1989年,來自14個歐洲國家的創始會員在一場會議倡議成立,成為一個學術社團,由溫納葛林人類學研究基金會(Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research)[1]页面存档备份,存于互联网档案馆)所支持。該會旨在藉由組織兩年一度的歐洲人類學會議,並藉由編輯其學術期刊《社會人類學》(Social Anthropology/Anthropologie Sociale),來推動歐洲的人類學。
