1790年美国人口普查（英語：1790 United States census）为美国建国以来首次举行的人口普查。此次普查以《美国宪法》第一章第二节为准则，于1790年8月2日在全美范围内举行。根据此次人口普查结果显示，当时全美总人口数约为3,929,214人。[1][2]

根据当时的一项法案规定，1790年人口普查由各司法辖区内的法警来完成。虽然这项法案之后经历了数次调整和扩充，但此后一直被采用，直至1840年人口普查。根据这项法案的规定，调查人员必须对每个家庭进行走访，并在调查完成后需要将结果贴在辖区内人流最密集的工作场所以供所有相关人员查看。除此之外，调查人员还需要将对辖区内每位居民的描述汇总后交由美国总统查阅。[3]

当今观点

时任总统乔治·华盛顿以及国务卿托马斯·杰斐逊都对此次普查结果表示怀疑，认为美国的总人口数被低估了。[4]而根据现代人的观点，造成低估的主要原因可能是当时人口分布较为分散、交通不便、当时技术的局限性以及部分居民拒绝参与人口普查。[5]

数据遗失问题

尽管此次普查结果从统计学的角度得到了验证，但其中几个州（包括特拉华州、佐治亚州、新泽西州和弗吉尼亚州）的数据记录文件于1790年至1830年间不慎遗失。[6]此外，几乎三分之一的原始数据记录文件遭损坏或丢失，其中包括康涅狄格州、缅因州、马里兰州、马萨诸塞州、新罕布什尔州、纽约州、北卡罗来纳州、宾夕法尼亚州、罗德岛州、南卡罗来纳州和佛蒙特州的部分人口普查数据。不过尽管如此，由于有很多文件引用了这些数据，因此这些数据能够以二手资料的形式所得到保留。[7]

数据可用性

1790年人口普查没有微观数据，不过用户可以从国家历史地理信息系统官网下载小区域的总体数据（英语：Aggregate data）及其对应的区域地图。[8]

人口普查时记录了户主的姓名，并将居民分为了十六岁以上白人自由男性（用于评估美国工业及军事潜力）、十六岁以下白人自由男性、白人自由女性、其他自由人（记录肤色和性别）和奴隶五类。[9]在美国国务卿托马斯·杰斐逊的带领下，各司法辖区的警长收集了全美十三州以及西南领地的普查数据。[3]不过需要注意的是，佛蒙特州的普查数据收集于1791年，因为该州直到1791年3月4日才加入联邦，之前一直是独立的佛蒙特共和国。

在此次普查中奴隶的占比为17.8%，是美国历次普查中最高的一次。[10]
