Does the Chinese Wikipedia use mainly Traditional or Simplified Chinese characters?

  • Simplified. A separate Traditional Wikipedia was closed down a year ago, and now the Chinese Wikipedia uses a conversion system. However, the majority of content is written originally in Simplified, with perhaps 10% in Traditional, probably half of which is pages relating to Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and overseas Chinese interests. Some articles are mixed. However, it should be emphasised that any article, no matter in which variety it is written, can be viewed in either. Conversion is not perfect, though. Examples of this include that the Simplified character "hou" which means "queen" and "after", is converted to the Traditional character which means "after", even when it refers to a queen (as in "wanghou"; when "wanghou" is converted with the character for "after", the traditional version means "after the king" rather than the proper "queen"). More information on the conversion system, and its various problems, can be found on Meta.
Unfortunately, it seems that due to poor conversion and the fact that most pages are in Simplified for default viewing, much of the Taiwanese Internet remains oblivious to Wikipedia. Many Hong Kong users appear to use the English version instead, probably because of the inherent inaccessibility. There have been isolated requests to re-open a separate Traditional Wikipedia, but they have not been made in a proper fashion and so are ignored.

Long Bow

Hello.

There is a famous book in the United States about China. The name of the book is "Fanshen". I think the book is called 翻身 in Chinese characters. It was written by William Hinton. It is about a town in Shanxi (山西) province. The town is in Lucheng (潞城) county. The town is called Long Bow, or in Wade-Giles it is called Changchuang. I looked for articles on these topics on Chinese Wikipedia. I found some like 山西. I was wondering if there was more information. Has anyone read this book?

Fanshen is the most famous book William Hinton wrote about the small town of Changchuang. He wrote another book about it called Shenfan. His daughter may write a book about this town as well.

Vitamin C

Hello,

I left lots of information on vitamin C, and saw the concerns about its originality and autorship. I like to assure you that these were my orignal writing. At one time, I thought of naming sodium ascorbate as 嘉興白藥, because Chia-sin in Chikiang is my home town. I deleted this reference because I thought it would not be appropriate for Wiki.

As for qualifications, I have a BS in chemistry from the National Taiwan University, MS and PhD in chemistry from University of Chicago. I taught briefly in National Taiwan University and in Yangming Medical School.

When the SARS epidemic was at its peak, I found the literature references that non-typical pneumonia was cured by intravenous injection of sodiaum ascorbate solution as early as 1948, and was amazed that this information was not available to physicians and population in general. I started an intensive search of medical journals in Stanford Medical School and found massive amount of literature on vitamin c and its effectiveness on a wide range of diseases. What I put in Wiki is some of the more important summary of this research. All the assertions are backed by solid research literature, which I did not have space to cite. However, the references I provided are good source to check out these research results.

I will be happy to discuss your concerns. I can be reached:

Dr. (Mr.) Chen-Hanson Ting (丁陳漢蓀) 156 14th Avenue San Mateo, CA 94402 (650) 571-7639 [email protected]

Regards,

Ting.

Korean kings on Chinese wiki

Hello, i'm a user from Korean wikipedia.

I would like to know why you put the real name of Korean kings as article titles instead of monarch names. (Refer to this article: 李祹) It doens't seem to be fair because all the kings from other countries are mentioned as monarch names in Chinese wiki. If you are worrried about confusion of Korean and Chinese monarchs, you can use parenthesis. example: 世宗 (朝鮮王)

I haven't seen this practice anywhere else. I really wonder where it comes from.

regards

It was a tradition in Mainland China to name all kings and emperor in this way. However, this format will be changing gradually. -- 石添小草 14:02 2005年12月5日 (UTC)
Not really. For example, we call the last King in Qing Dynasty as Puyi (爱新觉罗溥仪) instead of Xuantong Emperor (宣統皇帝). As you can see, we are not trying to discriminate against your king or what; it is just a way for us to refer him. -- Chongtin 09:43 2006年1月13日 (UTC)

Hong Kong

I hereby strongly protest against Wing, a China-born wikipedia admininstrator (in charge of the Chinese version of wikipedia) who keeps deleting the entries about the Hong Kong Independence Movement and the Hong Konger Front, both groups advocate building an independence sovereign state of Hong Kong;

China-born Wing (you lived in Maine, the USA, right), Hong Kongers are not Chinese, and at least 30% of Hong Kongers want the Chinese occupying troops (PLA) to get out of the Hong Kong, and at least 30% of Hong Kongers do want the Beijing regime to leave Hong Kong alone, and at least 30% of Hong Kongers have the visions of building an independent sovereign Hong Kong state

China-born Wing, I know you dislike Hong Kong separatists, but does it mean this (your hatred against Hong Kong separatists) is the reason why you are abusing your power to delete the entries of Hong Konger Front and Hongkong Independence Movement

China-born Wing You live and study in the USA, a democratic nation, but you have not learnt about democracy, and freedom of speech, and freedom of expression in the USA

China-born Wing, I think you pay no respect to the wikipedia, because you delete any politics-related entries you dislike

Hong Konger Frontline, calling for Hong Kong independence http://www.geocities.com/hk_front

Best regards, Hong Kong-born Chong

you all ran into a tree

Don't tell me you don't know how to read Chinese and Cantonese if you claim that you are a "Hongkonger"! Also, I did read your homepage, and I believe everyone, even a child in 5, can build such a stupid page. Please forgive me to use the word "stupid" to describe your homepage as it is really stupid! Sorry! By the way, I have NEVER HEARD of your organization even though I am a "Hong Konger"(I prefer to call myself Chinese), HOW CAN YOU EXPECT the other guys know what on the Earth it is?

The Symbol of Wikipedia

Hi, I just want to know what does it means the hanzi in front of the symbol of the Chinese Wikipedia?

These are the chinese character for 40,000 (which is departing), 50,000 (which we have just arrived) and 60,000 (for which we are now catching up). --Wing 18:39 2005年12月15日 (UTC)

You said the character "祖"? It means ancestor or grandfather. Combined with other characters, it might have the meaning pro-, fore-, grand-, original, etc.
e.g. "祖母" is grandmother; "祖籍" means ancestral home or original family home; "祖T细胞" in immunology refers to pro-T cells.
And it is also a chinese surname. 祖冲之(en:Zu Chongzhi) is a famous mathematician.
You can pronounce this character as /zu/.--Neverland 20:37 2005年12月28日 (UTC)
