據傳播媒體所敘述，奧托·米德爾頓（英語：Otto Middleton）應為劍橋公爵夫人嘉芙蓮所擁有的一隻黑色可卡犬。
生平
奧托和它的姐妹埃拉是一窩八隻小狗中的兩隻，他們倆由身為犬類育種者以及某種程度的狗的月嫂的克里斯蒂安·赫伯恩·斯科特所養大[1]。其他六隻小狗的名字不得而知[1]。
據英國皇家飼犬專家稱，奧托是嘉芙蓮的愛犬，而埃拉也成為了米德爾頓公爵家中的一員[2]。
媒體報道指出，奧托最初是在2007年送給嘉芙蓮的聖誕禮物[3]。《每日郵報》援引一位友人的說法，稱同時期嘉芙蓮給了她當時的男朋友劍橋公爵威廉王子一隻黑色的拉布拉多小狗以代替威爾斯王妃戴安娜送他的已經衰老的獵犬威警（Widgeon）。嘉芙蓮給威廉送出的禮物使威廉可以和她一起帶着各自的狗散步[3]。
吞食耳環惡行
指控

3月9日，《每日電訊報》修改了他們此前發出的新聞，修改後的內容聲稱奧托有「鐵一般的不在場證明」。同日，克里斯蒂安·赫伯恩·斯科特告知《每日電訊報》奧托實際上在約克郡，而且斯科特也不是把奧托給了嘉芙蓮，而是給了其弟的友人。飼養員還說埃拉才是實際送給嘉芙蓮的那條狗，而且沒有任何證據證明埃拉吃掉了耳環[1]。哈博特爾和劉易斯法律公司的律師、米德爾頓家族的發言人傑勒德·蒂雷爾也否認了這篇報道的真實性，同時打趣稱「我們為了找這條狗都快要急瘋了」[譯註 9][12]。
《每日郵報》隨後將整則報道從他們的網頁上撤下，並表示：

一年之後（2011年4月25日），網絡上的媒體工作者仍把奧托和耳環的報道當作事實引用[14][15]。2011年5月12日，英國公共關係網站PR fire稱在嘉芙蓮·米德爾頓的婚禮前夕，「寵物專家認為她的黑色可卡犬奧托也會感到緊張，因為它挑起了女主人的窘迫回憶」[譯註 12][16]。

2012年2月發表在《每日電訊報》上的一篇報道稱，劍橋公爵夫人最近收到了一隻小可卡犬[17]。再後來的報道指出，這隻小狗叫盧波（Lupo），是公爵夫人父母的狗埃拉的後代。文章還提到了早先的狗的報道，稱「據說埃拉的一個兄弟奧托吃了屬於公爵夫人的一對耳環，這對耳環是威廉王子在他們訂婚前買的」——但沒有聲明這篇報道事實上是假新聞[18]。
隨着對讀者的競爭日益激烈，特別是在互聯網對新聞媒體實時更新的要求之下，即便是所謂的優質「可靠」新聞來源也可能變得十分可疑。就如《紐約時報》在2013年12月的文章《如果一個故事如病毒般傳播，那麼其中的真相可能會受到打擊》（If a Story Is Viral, Truth May Be Taking a Beating）中提到的一般：
