English: At the Ahu Tongariki you are welcomed by The Traveling Moai in the foreground here. It received its name because he has traveled more than most moai. The explorer Thor Heyerdahl used him to test various theories about how the moai could "walk" from Rano Raraku to their spots around the island. In addition to that, he went to Japan for a world fair there. The people of Easter Island almost never let a moai leave the island, but they made an exception because the Japanese helped them erect the statues in the back, following a terrible tsunami in the 1960s. But now he's back, and here he will stay. |
