巨猿（学名：Gigantopithecus）是已灭绝的一属猿，生存于约100-30万年前的中国、印度及越南^[1]，与几种人科在时间框及地理位置上相同。^[2]化石纪录指步氏巨猿是最巨大的猿，站立时高3米及重545公斤。^[1]^[3]^[4]

化石遗骸

首个由人类学家孔尼华（Ralph von Koenigswald）描述的巨猿化石是于1935年在香港的一家中药店发现的，包括了一些化石化的牙齿及骨头，预备磨碎作为中药。^[5]孔尼华将这个它命名巨猿。^[6]

很少巨猿的化石被发现。除了在那中药店发现的臼齿外，在中国柳州亦有发现步氏巨猿的牙齿及几块颚骨。^[3]其他发现的地方包括越南及印度。^[2]^[4]从化石的发现地可见巨猿是分布在亚洲东南部。

中国体质人类学家及古灵长类学家董悌忱认为由于巨猿自身俱有一系列鲜明的差异性,例如巨猿下颌联合正中矢状断面及第三下颌与其他猿类及人类下颌齿槽弓轮廓的区别。巨猿代表了灵长类谱系树上一个完全独立的分支。因此，他以这种理由认为Gigantopithecinae是一个以Gigantopithecus为其分类属的新亚科，在逻辑上属于Pongidae，而不是Hominidae。 ^[7].
