Intel 80188为Intel 80186的一个衍生版本，跟80186不同的是，它只有一半的外部资料汇流排（External Data Bus），由16位元减至8位元，以助减低成本。
80188有四个16位元通用暂存器，亦可作为八个8位元暂存器。另外，它有十六个16位元的暂存器，包括：堆叠指标（Stack Pointer）、索引暂存器（Index registers）以及状态暂存器（Status word register）。
跟8086一样，它同有四个16位元位址暂存器以容许替64千位元组以上的记忆体给予位址。当超越16位元极限（即64KB）时，一个新的数值就会加入。这个位址系统可容许1百万位元组（1 MBytes）的位址记忆体，但在当时这个数字是比一台电脑所需的记忆体高出很多。
