馬提斯·詹姆士·里德（英語：Mathis James Reed，1925年9月6日—1976年8月29日）是美國藍調音樂家與詞曲作家。他那特別的電藍調風格不論是在藍調還是非藍調的聽眾裡都廣受歡迎。[1]他的歌曲如〈Honest I Do〉（1957年）、〈Baby What You Want Me to Do〉（1959年）、〈Big Boss Man〉（1961年）和〈Bright Lights, Big City〉（1961年）都出現在《告示牌雜誌》的節奏藍調歌曲榜和《告示牌》百大單曲榜上。[2]
里德深深影響後來的音樂人如艾維斯·普里斯萊、小漢克·威廉斯和曾翻唱過他的歌的滾石樂團。[3]搖滾創作歌手與音樂評論家小熊科達稱里德「也許是最有影響力的藍調樂手」，基於他那容易上手的樂風。[3]
生平
吉米·里德於1925年9月6日生在密西西比州的鄧利斯。他從朋友艾迪·泰勒那裡學了口琴和吉他。[4]經過數年的街頭表演之後，他於1943年移居伊利諾州的芝加哥，並被選入美國海軍並在第二次世界大戰中服役。他於1945年退役後短暫回到密西西比州與女友瑪麗（Mary Reed）結婚，隨後便一起搬到印第安纳州的蓋瑞，並在Armour的肉品包裝廠就職。瑪麗在這之後為里德的許多歌曲擔當和聲歌手，如〈Baby What You Want Me to Do〉、〈Big Boss Man〉和〈Bright Lights, Big City〉。[4]
到了1950年代，里德已成為一名地方上小有名氣的樂手，他曾與其他地方知名樂手：蓋瑞·金斯（Gary Kings、約翰·布里姆（John Brim）和威利·喬·鄧肯（Willie Joe Duncan）一起街演。盡管里德沒能與西洋棋唱片簽約，但他還是通過布里姆的鼓手艾伯特·金獲得了維傑唱片的一紙合約。在維傑唱片，里德與艾迪·泰勒再次一同演出並很快就有了第一首熱門歌曲〈You Don't Have to Go〉。[3]
里德即便經常過度酗酒，他還是保持著良好的聲譽；他最嚴重的時候甚至需要他老婆來幫忙記歌詞才能錄好一首歌。1957年，里德開始經常性的癲癇發作，但在這之前里德和醫生都以為這是酒毒性譫妄而已，所以沒有被精確診斷出來。[3]在維傑唱片1966年破產關閉後，里德的經紀人與新創立的ABC-Bluesway唱片簽下合同，但里德在這之後就沒能創下佳績。1968年，他在美國民間藍調音樂節上巡迴歐洲演出。[1]
里德於1976年因呼吸衰竭在加州的奧克蘭去世，享年50歲，距離他的51歲生日只有八天而已。他被安葬在伊利諾州沃思村落的林肯公墓（Lincoln Cemetery）。吉米·里德分別於1980年和1991年被追悼入藍調名人堂和搖滾名人堂。[6][7]
影響力
滾石樂團認為吉米·里德對他們的聲響有著重大影響，樂團早期的表演曲單還包括里德的歌曲〈Ain't That Lovin' You, Baby〉、〈The Sun Is Shining〉（滾石樂團曾在阿爾塔蒙特自由音樂會上演奏過這首歌）、〈Bright Lights, Big City〉和〈Shame, Shame, Shame〉，樂團1964年2月熱門單曲〈Not Fade Away〉的B面歌曲〈Little by Little〉就是模仿自〈Shame, Shame, Shame〉。滾石樂團在他們的首張專輯《The Rolling Stones》也翻唱了里德的〈Honest I Do〉（〈Little by Little〉也收錄在這張專輯裡）。[8]他們2016年的專輯《Blue & Lonesome》也翻唱了里德的〈Little Rain〉。[9]

史蒂夫·米勒樂團翻唱了五首里德的歌，分別是收錄於1968年專輯《Sailor》的〈You're So Fine〉，[19]以及收錄於1986年專輯《Living in the 20th Century》的〈I Wanna Be Loved (But by Only You)〉、〈Big Boss Man〉、〈Caress Me Baby〉和〈Ain't That Lovin' You Baby〉。[20]巴布·狄倫在他2020年專輯《坎坷之路》中寫了一首向里德致敬的歌曲〈Goodbye Jimmy Reed〉。
