創作

導演彼得·傑克森與負責配樂的霍華·蕭曾多次討論如何在電影情節中真正發揮到配樂的作用。如矮人首領索林·橡木盾的主題的就使用了法國圓號，以表現出這個角色失去故土伊魯伯的孤獨感；而咕嚕的主題則為了表現這個角色在迷霧山脈地底下生活的悲慘遭遇[22]。

影片裡矮人們在袋底洞裡亂扔盤子時唱的那首歌曲《磨鈍刀子》是由作曲家史蒂芬·加拉格爾作曲。而電影片尾（英语：Closing credits）曲《孤山之歌》則由紐西蘭歌手尼爾·芬恩（英语：Neil Finn）編寫歌詞及演唱，並與大衛·唐納森等人共同譜寫其旋律[22]。
