早年人生

比爾·威德斯出生於西維吉尼亞州的煤礦小鎮斯拉布佛克（英語：Slab Fork, West Virginia）。[4]他天生有着自己難以適應的口吃。[5]他在附近的貝克利長大，而他的父親在他13歲時過世。[5]威德斯18歲在美國海軍服役了9年，[6]在此期間，他克服了口吃，並開始對唱歌和寫歌感興趣。[7]

專輯獲得了成功，此時的威德斯開始與由沃茲103街節奏樂團（英語：Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band）的成員：鼓手詹姆士·加德森（英語：James Gadson）、結他手班諾斯·布萊克門（Benorce Blackmon）、琴鍵手雷·傑克森（Ray Jackson）、低音結他手梅爾文·鄧拉普（Melvin Dunlap）組成的伴奏樂團一同巡演。

在1972年3月14日星期二舉行的第14屆格林美獎上，威德斯以《Ain't No Sunshine》獲得最佳節奏藍調歌曲（英語：Grammy Award for Best R&B Song）。這首歌售出超過一百萬張，並於1971年9月被美國唱片業協會（RIAA）授予金唱片認證。[10]

在巡演中斷期間，威德斯錄製了他的第二張專輯《Still Bill（英語：Still Bill）》。主打單曲《Lean on Me（英語：Lean on Me (song)）》在1972年7月8日那一周成為冠軍單曲。這是威德斯確認銷量超過三百萬的第二張單曲。[10]緊接着的第二主打單曲《Use Me（英語：Use Me (Bill Withers song)）》於1972年8月發行，唱片銷量也突破百萬張，於1972年10月12日同樣被RIAA授予金唱片認證。[10]他於1972年10月6日在卡內基音樂廳的演出被錄製成於1973年4月21日發行的現場專輯《Live at Carnegie Hall（英語：Live at Carnegie Hall (Bill Withers album)）》。1974年，威德斯錄製了專輯《+'Justments（英語：+'Justments）》，但因為與薩塞克斯唱片的法律糾紛，他無法再錄製其他作品。

哥倫比亞唱片

離開哥倫比亞唱片後的事業

1988年，由DJ班·利布蘭德（英語：Ben Liebrand）以《Lovely Day》重混的歌曲《Lovely Day (Sunshine Mix)》登上英國單曲榜的第四名。這使得威德斯在當年被受邀至音樂節目《Top of the Pops》演出。[19]

1986年，威德斯與新俱樂部樂團（英語：Club Nouveau）重製了《Lean on Me》，此曲收錄於樂團的首張專輯《Life, Love & Pain（英語：Life, Love & Pain）》並由華納兄弟唱片公司發行。1987年，威德斯因此得到他的第9次格林美獎提名並在1988年3月22日以作曲人身分得到格林美最佳節奏藍調歌曲獎。[6]1996年，R&B製作組合黑街合唱團（英語：Blackstreet）採樣了《Grandma's Hands》並用在了Dr. Dre客串的歌曲《No Diggity（英語：No Diggity）》。 這張單曲在《Billboard》百強單曲榜上排名第一並售出了160萬份，同時在1998年獲得了格林美最佳節奏藍調組合演唱獎。

威德斯在吉米·巴菲特（英語：Jimmy Buffett）的2004年專輯《License to Chill（英語：License to Chill）》中與他合作了兩首歌。隨着《Still Bill》和《Just as I Am》分別在2003年1月28日和2005年3月8日發行重發版，造成諸多將會有以之前未發行的材料製作的新專輯的猜測。[20]2006年，已併購哥倫比亞唱片的索尼將以前未發行的材料交還給威德斯。

2007年，《Lean on Me》被引入格林美名人堂（英語：Grammy Hall of Fame）。

2005年，威德斯入選詞曲作家名人堂（英語：Songwriters Hall of Fame）。[6]2015年4月18日，威德斯入選搖滾名人堂並由史提夫·汪達擔任引言人。威德斯在得知此事時表示震驚，他說：「我認為這是一種消耗獎，我在短暫的職業生涯中寫出沒有人去錄製的類型的歌。我不是什麼炫技大師，但我能夠寫出人們可以認同的歌曲。對一個來自西維吉尼亞州斯拉布佛克的人來說，我應該做的不差。」[5][21]

2015年10月1日，艾羅·布萊克、紅髮艾德、約翰博士（英語：Dr. John）、麥可·麥克唐納（英語：Michael McDonald (musician)）、安東尼·漢米爾頓（英語：Anthony Hamilton (musician)）等人在卡內基音樂廳舉行了一場致敬比爾·威德斯的音樂會，來重製他的1973年現場專輯《Live at Carnegie Hall》。威德斯本人也親自到場並在台上致詞。[22][23]

2017年2月12日，他在MSNBC上露面談論了難民危機以及美國的政治氣候。[24]

個人生活

1973年，威德斯在女演員丹妮絲·尼可拉斯（英語：Denise Nicholas）拍攝喜劇實境秀《Room 222（英語：Room 222）》期間與她結婚。在他們結婚前一年，尼古拉斯向當局報告說威德斯在威脅要結束他們的關係後對她進行了身體攻擊，但她拒絕提出指控。[25]這對夫妻於1974年離婚。[26]

1976年，威德斯與瑪西婭·強森（Marcia Johnson）結婚，兩人育有一子一女：陶德（Todd Withers）和科莉（Kori Withers）。[5]瑪西婭最終接管了他在比佛利山莊的出版公司的直接管理，兩人的孩子們在成年後也參與其中。[27]

威德斯於2020年3月30日因心臟病併發症在洛杉磯去世，享壽81歲。他的家人在4月3日公佈死訊時表示他們「因失去摯愛、忠誠的丈夫和父親而悲慟不已」。[28][29]
