2009年10月1日，「機遇號」漫遊車在火星上發現了謝爾特島隕石（Shelter Island meteorite），它大約有27厘米（11英寸）長[3]。
歷史
謝爾特島隕石是火星車在子午線高原數百米範圍內遇到的三顆鐵隕石中的第二顆，其他二顆為布洛克島和麥基諾島[1]。
謝爾特島可能在諾亞紀晚期墜落在火星上，並已嚴重風化[1][4]。
