伯明翰城市大学（Birmingham City University，缩写：BCU）是位于英国伯明翰的一所新大学。是该城市三所学校中第二大的大学。历史可追溯到1843年成立的伯明翰艺术学院，[4] 1971年被认定为理工学院，1992年获大学地位。该大学有七个校区。[5]

理工学院

1967年伯明翰市教育委员会开始计划将该市的数个学院合并起来建立一个理工学院。[6] 1969年已经登出该学校的广告。[7] 但学校本身直到1971年才建成，[8] 名为伯明翰市理工学院（City of Birmingham Polytechnic），是时任教育大臣玛格丽特·撒切尔任命的第27所理工学院，也是该市最早建立的理工学院之一。[9]

该学校由五所学院组成，曾有教员一度反对合并一事。[10] 这五所学院是：[11]

  • 伯明翰艺术学院（Birmingham School of Art），成立于1843年
  • 伯明翰音乐学院（Birmingham School of Music），1859年建成
  • 伯明翰商学院（Birmingham College of Commerce），20世纪初建立
  • 南伯明翰科技学院（South Birmingham Technical College），1961年建立
  • 北伯明翰科技学院（North Birmingham Technical College），1966年建立

理工学院的中心校区是1971年始建的Perry Barr校区，但组成学院依旧存在于城市的其他地方。[12] 整个70年代，该学校在艺术与设计领域都较为强势。[10][13]

1975年，另外三所学院并入：

  • 安斯蒂体育学院（Anstey College of Physical Education），1897年建立
  • 博德斯利教育学院（Bordesley College of Education），1963年建立
  • 伯明翰市教育学院（City of Birmingham College of Education），1948年建立

根据1988年教育改革法令，该理工学院被置于伯明翰当地教育局的控制之下，地位则变成了独立的慈善机构。[14]

大学地位

根据1992年继续和高等教育法令，该技校获得了大学地位。英国枢密院授予其“伯明翰中央英格兰大学”（University of Central England in Birmingham）的称号。1992年毕业的学生获得“中央英格兰大学”（University of Central England）的毕业证书。[15]

1995年，伯明翰那和索利哈尔护士和助产学学院（Birmingham and Solihull College of Nursing and Midwifery）以及西米德兰放射学学院（West Midlands School of Radiography）并入该大学。

2003年，该大学被提议并入伯明翰大学，但立刻被后者拒绝。同年11月提议并入该市的另一所大学阿斯顿大学，[16] 但12月3日再次被拒。[17]

重命名

2007年6月提出大学改名计划，[18] 虽然62.1%的教员支持改名为伯明翰都会大学（Birmingham Metropolitan University），但在同年10月依然采用了只有48.2%支持率的现名。[19] [20][21] 此外还有一个提名是“伯明翰张伯伦大学”（Birmingham Chamberlain University）。

此外改名计划还因开销过大（£285,084）而受到批评。[22][23][24][25]

学术

研究

该大学有五个优秀科研中（Centres of Research Excellence），[26] 2008年科研评估认为其有70%的研究达到国际标准，15%为“国际领先”。在艺术与设计领域的研究居于全国前十位，是伦敦之外三大艺术学校之一。[27] 研究能力位于全国第63位。[28]
