夏威夷僧海豹（学名：Neomonachus schauinslandi）是新僧海豹属下的一种濒危物种，原产于夏威夷群岛，因而得名。[2]此外它也是夏威夷灰白蝙蝠之外当地唯一的原生哺乳动物。[3]因为人类的过度捕杀和栖息地破坏，夏威夷僧海豹的数量现仅有1,100左右。[4][5][6]
语源学
夏威夷僧海豹在当地语言中称为ʻIlio-holo-i-ka-uaua，意思是“在波浪中奔跑的狗”。其学名中的种加词则是来自1899年于在莱桑岛发现了夏威夷僧海豹头骨的德国科学家雨果·赫尔曼·绍因斯兰（Hugo Hermann Schauinsland）。[7]
描述
夏威夷僧海豹有着灰色的毛皮、白色的腹部，身体修长；头部扁平而较小。[8][9]其体格使得其可以在深海珊瑚礁里寻觅鱼虾及章鱼、乌贼等食物。[10]在不捕猎时，它们会躺在西北夏威夷群岛的沙滩上晒太阳。[11]成年夏威夷海豹重170—205千克（375—452英磅），体长2.1—2.3米（6英尺11英寸—7英尺7英寸）。[8]
