劇情梗概

2017年，《泰晤士報》記者奧黛麗·紐豪斯採訪了剛出版新書《致年輕演員的信》（Letters to a Young Actor）的人氣演員魯伯特·坦納。在書中，坦納搜集了小時候與美國演員約翰·唐納文的往來書信，而唐納文最終因吸毒過量不幸離世。

時間回到2000年中，童星出道的坦納在學校被恐同的同學期間，回到家還要忍受母親的精神虐待。當時坦納非常崇拜在青春題材電視劇《地獄高中》（Hell some High）中擔綱主角的唐納文。當時小報紛紛推測唐納文是同性戀，但是沒有公開出櫃。後來小報製造了唐納文招攬男妓的謠言，唐納文一怒之下公開了自己與坦納的書信往來，引發外界不懷好意地猜測坦納和唐納文的關係不純。唐納文給坦納寫了最後一封信後，便自殺身亡。

回到現在，坦納說自己並不知道唐納文的死與醜聞到底有沒有關係。紐曼斯則陷入沉思，表示自己最初不太看好坦納的書，覺得這本書是「來自第一世界的不幸」，但經過這次會面，她不再這麼覺得了。

製作

2014年12月，消息指基特·哈靈頓和潔西卡·雀絲坦將出演電影，札維耶·多藍導演，雅各布·蒂爾尼（英語：Jacob Tierney）編劇，其中哈靈頓將扮演主角，查斯坦扮演記者[5]。同月，蘇珊·莎蘭登和凱西·貝茲加盟劇組，莎蘭登扮演唐納文的母親，貝茲扮演唐納文的經紀人[6][7]。

2015年11月，消息指愛黛兒有望在電影中客串，相關事宜正在商談中[8]。同月，邁可·坎邦、貝拉·索恩、克里斯·澤爾卡、艾米麗·漢普謝爾（英語：Emily Hampshire）和賈里德·基索（英語：Jared Keeso）加盟劇組[9]。2016年2月，娜塔莉·波曼、尼可拉斯·霍特和譚蒂·紐頓加盟[10]。2016年7月，班·史奈澤加盟劇組，取代霍爾特[11]。2017年2月，雅各·特倫布雷加盟劇組[12]。2017年6月，阿瑪拉·卡蘭（英語：Amara Karan）加盟[13]。

拍攝

主體拍攝於2016年7月9日在蒙特婁啟動[16][17][18]。第一組主體拍攝於2016年9月3日結束[19]。2017年2月，劇組移師蒙特婁，同年春季在倫敦和布拉格完成拍攝[20][21]。

後期製作

2018年2月，多蘭確認考慮到時長及節奏因素，潔西卡·雀絲坦的戲份會從成片中刪除[22][23]。2018年10月，貝拉·索恩在採訪中表示自己也有一些戲份，但這些戲份是和查斯坦連在一起的，所以一併被刪除了[24]。

發行

電影曾受邀參加第71屆坎城影展展出，但據電影節藝術總監蒂埃里·弗雷莫透露，多蘭當時還不滿意成片，還在繼續剪輯[25]。電影後來於2018年9月10日在多倫多國際影展首映[26][27]。電影於2019年3月13日在法國上映[28]，8月23日在加拿大上映[29]，12月13日在美國上映[30]。

反響

匯總媒體爛番茄根據32條評論打出19%的腐爛度，平均得分3.7/10。網站共識寫道：「《約翰·唐納文的死與生》證明了導演兼編劇札維耶·多藍想用一部技術層面有保證的劇情片來展現自己的深度，但這部劇情片從未傳遞出自身想表達的想法[3]。」Metacritic根據12條評論打出28/100的平均分，表示「普遍差評」[31]。

獨立一線稱電影是多蘭職業生涯中最差的一部作品，劇本「空洞無物」又「笨拙」[4]。《衛報》打出1/5星評價，稱電影「毫無疑問是爛片」[32]。《NOW雜誌（英語：Now (newspaper)）》認為電影「充其量只能算平庸」[33]。RogerEbert.com（英語：RogerEbert.com）批評多蘭選擇的音樂，認為電影有「重大缺陷」，但也稱讚特倫布雷的表現[34][35]。《好萊塢報道》認為演員陣容「令人印象深刻」，但電影是「不成熟、繁瑣、冗長的心理劇」[36]。

國際銀幕給出了少有的正面評價，認為電影「或許會重現許多多蘭熟悉的領域，但以這種形式歡迎他回家是件好事」[37]。
