艾布拉姆斯1912年出生於新澤西州朗布蘭奇。他是東歐猶太移民[1]、房屋油漆工之子。他1930年進入哈佛大學讀本科，是家中首位大學生。他攻讀英語專業是因為「其他行業同樣沒有工作……與其餓著肚子做不喜歡的事，不如享受飢餓」[2]。艾布拉姆斯1934年取得學士學位後，拿到劍橋大學抹大拉學院的亨利研究生獎學金，導師為I·A·瑞恰慈[3]。傳主1935年重回哈佛大學讀研究生，1937年獲碩士學位、1940年獲博士學位。

第二次世界大戰期間，艾布拉姆斯在哈佛大學心理聲學實驗室工作，解決嘈雜軍事環境下的語音通信問題。他負責制定高度可聽的軍事密碼，發明測試甄選嘈雜環境下的出眾辨音者[4]。傳主1945年成為康奈爾大學的教授，學生有文學評論家哈羅德·布魯姆、加亞特里·斯皮瓦克、E·D·赫希，小說家威廉·H·加斯、托馬斯·品欽等[1][5]。

艾布拉姆斯1953年發表了文論《鏡與燈：浪漫主義文論及批評傳統》。該書提出：在浪漫主義之前，理論一般認為文學是面鏡子，通過模仿來反映現實世界；但浪漫主義者認為寫作更像是盞燈，作家內心溢出靈魂之光照亮世界[6]。他還在書中還將文學理論分為四類，即：模仿說（注重作品與世界的關係）、實用說（注重作品與讀者的關係）、表現說（注重作品與作者的關係）、客觀說（注重分析著作本身）[7]。該書登上現代圖書館1998年的20世紀百大英語非小說書單[8] 。

艾布拉姆斯還主編了《諾頓英國文學選集》（1962年），並擔任「浪漫主義時期」（1798年—1832年）部分的主筆[9]。他在書中對文學家做了點評，如介紹拜倫勳爵時強調了拜倫主義與尼采超人哲學的關聯[10]，稱雪萊的悲劇在於「他總是懷著最好的願望，帶給自己和所愛之人災難與痛苦」[11]。

艾布拉姆斯1963年當選美國文理科學院院士[12]，1973年當選美國哲學會會員[13]。

2008年，婚齡71年的妻子露絲去世[14]。2015年4月21日，艾布拉姆斯於在紐約州伊薩卡去世，享年102歲[15][16]。
