維基百科賴以運作的基本原則被總結為五大「支柱」的形式：

維基百科是線上百科全書。 它包含 general 百科全書、 specialized 百科全書、年鑑、地理志和地方志的元素。維基百科不是個人演講台，不是廣告平台，不是自費出版社，不是無政府主義或民主的試驗場，不是不經篩選的資訊收集處，也不是線上目錄。維基百科不是辭典、新聞媒體或文獻庫；這類內容應該改為貢獻至維基媒體姊妹計劃。

維基百科採用中立觀點。我們力求條目不擁護單一觀點。有時這須要重新表達為多個觀點，在來龍去脈中準確地表達每個觀點，並不把任何觀點表達為「真理」、「真相」或「最佳觀點」。所有條目必為可供查證的準確性而努力：沒有參考依據的資料可以被移刪，所以請提供參考來源。編輯的個人經驗、詮釋或意見不屬於這裡。這意味的是引用可供查證的、權威性的來源，尤其在有爭議性的話題和當所講的是在世的人。如果在著手中立性時出現衝突，則在討論頁商討細節，並跟從爭論解決方法。

維基百科的內容是自由的，任何人都可以編輯和散佈。尊重版權法，並避免抄襲。不自由的內容可以依據合理使用而被接受，但請力尋其他自由的媒體檔案或內容，替代任何您想添加至維基百科的不自由作品。既然，你的全部貢獻都授權給公眾享用自由，那麼，就沒有編輯者擁有任何條目；你貢獻出的全部，都可以並且會，被毫不留情地編輯和再散佈。

Wikipedians should interact in a respectful and civil manner. Respect and be polite to your fellow Wikipedians, even when you disagree. Apply Wikipedia etiquette, and avoid personal attacks. Find consensus, avoid edit wars, and remember that there are 1,418,547 articles on the English Wikipedia to work on and discuss. Act in good faith, never disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point, and assume good faith on the part of others. Be open and welcoming.

Wikipedia does not have firm rules. Rules on Wikipedia are not fixed in stone, and the spirit of the rule trumps the letter of the rule. Be bold (but not reckless) in updating articles and do not worry about making mistakes. Your efforts do not need to be perfect; prior versions are saved, so no damage is irreparable.
