1790年美國人口普查（英語：1790 United States census）為美國建國以來首次舉行的人口普查。此次普查以《美國憲法》第一章第二節為準則，於1790年8月2日在全美範圍內舉行。根據此次人口普查結果顯示，當時全美總人口數約為3,929,214人。[1][2]

根據當時的一項法案規定，1790年人口普查由各司法轄區內的法警來完成。雖然這項法案之後經歷了數次調整和擴充，但此後一直被採用，直至1840年人口普查。根據這項法案的規定，調查人員必須對每個家庭進行走訪，並在調查完成後需要將結果貼在轄區內人流最密集的工作場所以供所有相關人員查看。除此之外，調查人員還需要將對轄區內每位居民的描述匯總後交由美國總統查閱。[3]

當今觀點

時任總統佐治·華盛頓以及國務卿湯馬士·傑佛遜都對此次普查結果表示懷疑，認為美國的總人口數被低估了。[4]而根據現代人的觀點，造成低估的主要原因可能是當時人口分佈較為分散、交通不便、當時技術的局限性以及部分居民拒絕參與人口普查。[5]

數據遺失問題

儘管此次普查結果從統計學的角度得到了驗證，但其中幾個州（包括特拉華州、佐治亞州、新澤西州和維珍尼亞州）的數據記錄文件於1790年至1830年間不慎遺失。[6]此外，幾乎三分之一的原始數據記錄文件遭損壞或丟失，其中包括康涅狄格州、緬因州、馬利蘭州、麻省、新罕布什爾州、紐約州、北卡羅萊納州、賓夕凡尼亞州、羅德島州、南卡羅萊納州和佛蒙特州的部分人口普查數據。不過儘管如此，由於有很多文件引用了這些數據，因此這些數據能夠以二手資料的形式所得到保留。[7]

1790年人口普查沒有微觀數據，不過用戶可以從國家歷史地理資訊系統官網下載小區域的總體數據（英語：Aggregate data）及其對應的區域地圖。[8]

人口普查時記錄了戶主的姓名，並將居民分為了十六歲以上白人自由男性（用於評估美國工業及軍事潛力）、十六歲以下白人自由男性、白人自由女性、其他自由人（記錄膚色和性別）和奴隸五類。[9]在美國國務卿湯馬士·傑佛遜的帶領下，各司法轄區的警長收集了全美十三州以及西南領地的普查數據。[3]不過需要注意的是，佛蒙特州的普查數據收集於1791年，因為該州直到1791年3月4日才加入聯邦，之前一直是獨立的佛蒙特共和國。

在此次普查中奴隸的佔比為17.8%，是美國曆次普查中最高的一次。[10]
